My dad used to tell a story about the Wells, Fargo & Company stage line and their search for stagecoach drivers back in the 1800’s. The company had a route through the Rocky Mountains, and because of the narrow, rocky trails the stages traveled, the company lost a lot of stagecoaches.
Many men applied for the jobs. As they waited to be interviewed, they bragged about how near the edge of the mountain roads they could drive without losing control. After listening to them, one young man stood up and said, “I want to withdraw my application.”
The Wells Fargo representative said, “Wait a minute. Why do you want to withdraw your application?” The young man replied, “Well, these men are talking about how close they can drive to the edge and not go over. If you hired me, I’d drive as close to the mountain as I could!”
“Mister, come inside,” the man from Wells Fargo said. “You’ve got the job. You’re the kind of driver we’re looking for!”
I’m like that young man. I don’t want to live on the edge… as close to the world as I can without being destroyed by it. I want to live close to the Rock, Jesus Christ.
Are you living on the edge? It’s not worth the risk. Don’t take chances with your eternal soul. Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again” (John 3:3 NIV). If you would like to be born again, pray this simple prayer: Lord, I repent of my sins. I ask Your forgiveness. Today I want to begin a new life with you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
