John 8:32 says, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 17:17 says that God’s Word is truth. But it’s only when you know the truth of God’s Word that it can make you free. The promises in the Word of God are available to you all the time, but you need to know what you have in order for them to work in your life. Let me give you an example of what I mean.
One Sunday morning Richard and I were hurrying to get ready to go to church…it was one of those mornings. You know how they go. Just as we were about ready to leave, Richard came running down the stairs in a panic, holding his hairbrush up in his left hand. He said, “Lindsay! I’m running late, and I can’t find my hairbrush anywhere!”
I looked at him and asked, with a completely straight face, “Where have you looked?” He told me he had looked upstairs and downstairs, but couldn’t find his brush.
Then I asked the crucial question: “Have you looked in your left hand?” He looked and said, “I can’t believe it! How did it get there?”
The hairbrush was there all the time! But Richard didn’t know he had it, so he couldn’t use it. That’s just like the Word of God. God’s promises have been there for us all along, but if we don’t know they’re there, they are of no value to us.
When you need help, don’t be tempted to go running here and there, to this place and that place, or turning to the world for answers. Look in God’s Word. You can find help there for whatever you’re facing.
