Why would God use the raven to feed the prophet Elijah? In the natural, the raven is the least likely bird to feed anyone. The raven is a scavenger. He’s a bird that consumes meat and is not one that shares. Yet God used the least likely bird to sustain the prophet. And what’s even more amazing is the fact that the raven didn’t eat the meat itself!
I believe God used the raven because the prophet Elijah had to experience the supernatural for himself before he could ask the widow of Zarephath to believe the supernatural for herself. I believe God sent Elijah to the widow—the least likely person to sustain him—because, having experienced God‘s supernatural provision for himself, he could then teach it to her and sustain her…not just for one meal, but for always. And because the widow believed and acted on the prophet’s word, she was able to sustain the man of God, and God poured it back to her in an abundant harvest exceedingly above anything she could have asked or thought. (See Ephesians 3:20.)
Once Elijah understood the system of God’s supernatural provision for himself, he could not be talked out of it. It was the same in my own life. When I was 18 years old, I was told that I would never have children, yet I have three daughters! Like the prophet Elijah, I experienced the supernatural power of God, so I’m not just talking off the top of my head when I say that I believe God can move supernaturally in the lives of people. I can say it because when you experience the supernatural power of God in your life — when you’ve lived it — no one can talk you out of it!
