David said in Psalm 57:7, My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise [to God]. If you could line up the people of the world, how many would have a broken heart? How many of us have said at times, “My heart is broken?” Or we say, “You break my heart.”
When your spirit is damaged, you can’t look up, you can’t smile, you feel no joy. And that means you have no strength to face life, for the joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10).
In Luke 4:18, Jesus said, He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted. Sympathy is a wonderful thing because is causes people to sit with us, to try to lift us up and encourage us. But Christ comes with compassion. The Bible says in Matthew 14:14, And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. Christ was sent to fix our broken hearts, to heal our spirits, to lift our heads, and to cause us to praise the Lord.
I recall in one of my crusades an elderly man was brought into the prayer line supposedly to be healed of blindness. When I said to him, “Sir, why are you here?” he replied, “My neighbor talked me into it.” “Well,” I said, “don’t you need to be healed?” “Oh,” he said, “I’m blind, but I don’t believe in this stuff.” I asked him. “Would you just let me touch you? It won’t do you any harm. You won’t be any more blind than you are now.” He agreed. “If that makes you feel any better, go ahead.” I touched him, but in my heart I prayed, “O Lord, get me out of this some way.” They led him away, and I went ahead with the rest of the service.
The next morning, there was a knock on my door. It was the chairman of the crusade who asked, “Do you remember that blind man last night? In the night, the Lord woke him up and reminded him of the scene he created in the crusade. The man was sorry and realized he was a sinner. He asked God to forgive him and save him, which God did. This morning when the sun rose, he opened his eyes and looked out the window. The sun was streaming in, and he saw the sunrise!”
That night was a glory night! There is hope for blind eyes today! There is hope for better sight today. And there is hope for spiritual blindness!
