Everyone has experienced discouragement. You may have wondered if being a Christian means that you should feel wonderful all the time. But let me tell you that Christians don’t live by feelings! The Bible teaches that “the just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17). Feelings are fickle…they can change all the time and they will betray you. Your mood may fluctuate with the weather, your environment, your health, or your circumstances. I cannot say that just because you’re a Christian you’re going to feel wonderful all the time.
However, Jesus has promised you His joy! John 15:11 says “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” His joy is not a fleeting, transitory emotion that the world calls happiness or fun. The joy of the Lord is a deep, enduring assurance that provides you with a contentment that doesn’t fade in the midst of trying circumstances or struggles.
That’s because true Christian joy is based on faith. Faith stands up to rugged everyday living. No one is immune from troubles, from financial or physical reverses; but you can have confidence that even though troubles come, they can never go beyond the control of God.
Deuteronomy 33:27 says, “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.” You can have a sustaining joy in knowing that God is your refuge in any time of trouble, and His everlasting arms are beneath you!
