A Source is Not an Instrument

Richard RobertsThird of three parts

There’s a great difference between a source and an instrument. God alone is your Source. Everything else ― and every other person ― is an instrument, and ultimately an instrument at God’s disposal.

In Acts 10 we read the story of how Peter traveled to the house of Cornelius as the result of a vision from God, and when he entered Cornelius’ house, Cornelius “fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.” But Peter took him up, saying, “Stand up; I myself also am a man” (Acts 10:25–26). Now, Peter was not just an ordinary man. He was an apostle of Jesus, a man who had walked and talked with Him. Peter had preached some of the most powerful sermons ever preached, and had seen thousands join the new church in Jerusalem as a result. He had experienced miracles of healing as he laid hands on the sick and spoke the word of faith to them. But … Peter refused to be worshipped as the Source. He knew that he was an instrument of God.

Perhaps you see a certain man or woman as your source of money… your source of love… your source of comfort. But God alone is your only true Source. It is because of this that we can cry out to God, “Use whatever means You want to use to supply my life today. Use whatever person You choose today to provide for me. I trust You ― and You alone ― to meet all my needs.”

I once heard it said, “Glance at people―Gaze at Jesus.”

That’s a great way to live.
