Accept the Call

From the archives of Evelyn Roberts

To minister for the Lord in some way is the highest calling anyone can have. Your calling doesn’t have to be behind a pulpit―there are many ways to minister.

When I first married Oral, somebody asked me what my husband was called to do. I replied that we were both called to the ministry. The person asked if I was called to the ministry too. I answered, “God has never called me into the ministry like He did Oral, but He says in His Word that each of us is to minister the good news of Jesus” (II Corinthians 5:18–19).

I’ve been a Sunday school teacher and have done many things in ministry alongside my husband; however, God never called me to minister in the pulpit. But I accepted my husband’s call as my own. When I married Oral, I said, “If you have a call on your life, then I have one on mine. I will take your call, and it will be my call.”

The Book of Ruth tells of a Gentile woman, Ruth, who said to her Israelite mother-in-law, Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God (Ruth 1:16). When I married Oral, that’s what I did. I took him, and I took his call right along with him. And it’s been a blessed, blessed ministry!

As you accept God’s call and submit to His plan for your life, you’ll find that it is so much better than any plan you could have envisioned for yourself. Even if it is different from the one you expected, God’s plan is good and filled with joy!
