Avoid the Middle

Lindsay Roberts

A few years ago, Richard and I were in New York City and one of our partners invited us to go to a baseball game with him. The Yankees were playing Boston, which is within driving distance, so many Boston fans were in the stadium. As it turned out, the seats we had seemed to be right along the dividing line between the New York fans and the Boston fans.

When New York got a home-run, some of the Boston fans threw their beer cans and cursed at the New York fan several rows away. When Boston got a run, some of the New York fans threw their beer cans and cursed at the Boston fans. And guess who was caught sitting right in the middle!

Finally I said, “Richard, this is ridiculous. Let’s get out of here!”

I was reminded of what Jesus said in Revelation 3:15–16, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

Jesus was saying, “Stay out of the middle ground!” If you’re going to be on God’s side, then be on God’s side today and every day. Don’t act like a Christian on Sunday and a sinner on Monday. Don’t work for God only when you’re in church and fail to give Him a second thought when you’re at work. As Joshua stood and challenged the people of Israel, “Choose this day whom you will serve” (Joshua 24:15), let us be challenged today to serve the Lord with everything we have and are!
