We all want to walk in God’s protection, and His Word tells us that we can. Psalm 91:11 says, He shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. But we have a part in that promise. It’s up to us to listen and obey God when He speaks to us or warns us not to do something.
I’ll give you an example. One time I was driving home from an errand, and I was running late. I was almost to a certain store where a friend had previously been shopping when the Lord spoke to my heart, “Stop and buy that outfit your friend wanted.”
Now I was in a hurry, and I didn’t think I had time to stop, so I told God I’d do it another day.
Several times I felt God telling me to stop and obey Him, but I was not listening—I kept on going past the store! As I did, He spoke to me very sternly and said, “Turn your car around now and do what I said!” I thought, Well, God sure is interested in that outfit for my friend!
I turned the car around and went back and bought the outfit, not knowing how God was working. While I was in the store, a terrible accident happened down the street where I would have been had I kept on going and not stopped.
Later as I drove by the accident, the Lord said to me, “I was not nearly as interested in that outfit as I was in saving your life.”
I learned a valuable lesson that day. God wants to protect us…and I believe only when we get to heaven will we know how many times He has kept us out of harm’s way. But our faith pleases God (Hebrews 11:6). Learning to listen for and immediately obey His leading by the Holy Spirit shows we are trusting Him and growing in Him.
