Hundreds of years ago great horses were trained in the deserts of Arabia. One trainer stood out above all the others. He used an incredible system to train horses to obey. Instead of using voice commands, he used a whistle.
When travel required going long distances in the desert, a horse was needed that could go without water for a long period of time. Arabian horses could go for long periods of time without water. Without such a horse, riders could easily die in those hot desert lands.
The finest horses were always presented to the kings. But before that, they had to pass a most unusual final course to ensure they would obey the kings’ commands. The trainer would make the horses go without water longer than ever before. Then he would release them to run to the oasis. The horses would take off like wildfire when they smelled the water. But just as they would put their muzzles into the water, the trainer would blow the whistle. The horses that pricked their ears, turned around, and trotted back to the trainer passed the course. Those were the horses that were given to the kings.
Those horses didn’t understand why their trainer blew the whistle when he did, but they obeyed, and they were rewarded. God doesn’t expect us to understand everything when He tells us to do or not to do something, but He asks us to obey anyway. The Holy Spirit is our whistle. He’s not only with us, He lives in us. Isaiah 30:21 says, Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying “This is the way, walk in it.” When we listen for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and walk in it, we can expect Him to lead us in God’s perfect will.
