Lottery Faith

There was once a young man who wanted a quick fix for a problem in his life. “God,” he said, “I need a Scripture. Speak to me.” He flipped his Bible open to Matthew 27:5 NIV which said that Judas went away and hanged himself. He thought, “This scripture isn’t the solution I’m looking for!”

“God,” he said, “speak to me again.” This time he flipped his Bible open to John 13:27 NIV which read, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” Well, that wasn’t the answer he wanted either!

The young man was practicing “lottery faith,” using the Bible as a gimmick, hoping to get a quick fix by thumbing through its pages and pointing to a chance Scripture. To understand the Bible you have to look at it as a whole, from Genesis to Revelation. As you take it line by line, chapter by chapter, you begin to understand God’s pattern of doing things.

For example, in Genesis 8:22 NKJV, God says that the kingdom of God is as a seed: While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest … shall not cease. In the New Testament He talks about the same thing. Seedtime and harvest, sowing and reaping: whatever a man sows, that he will also reap (Galatians 6:7 NKJV). What you put in, you get out. If you sow kindness, peace, love, joy, or obedience, God honors it and multiplies it back to you in the form of a harvest…Good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over (Luke 6:38)!

God’s system of doing things is not by chance. It’s not a gimmick. The Word is all tied together. And it works!
