Resisting Temptation

Richard RobertsFifth of six parts

Four: It is inevitable that you will face temptation. Learn to resist it. Joseph was doing wonderfully in the house of Potiphar, but there was one big problem—Potiphar’s wife. The Bible says that she cast longing eyes at Joseph. Now, Joseph was a man of integrity, and he did not want to disobey God. He did not want to lose his Christian witness with Potiphar and other Egyptians, for he knew Potiphar had his eye on him.

Don’t keep your Christian witness just because people are watching you. Do it because God is saying to you, “Live right; keep straight.” The Bible says, Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound (Romans 5:20). You will find temptation wherever you go, for satan knows that weak point in your life, and that’s where he will attack you. He will always attack you at your weakest point. And a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Joseph was not immune to temptation. When Potiphar’s wife said, “Go to bed with me,” Joseph ran the other way. She tore his clothing and accused him of a crime which he didn’t commit. Again, he wound up in prison.

For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God (1 Peter 2:20).
