Right Starts

Lindsay Roberts

When our children were young, we would normally start our day at home talking about God and having prayer as we prepared to eat breakfast and go about our normal morning routines.

One time, however, Jordan and Olivia had two of their little playmates spend the night and when the children got up, they decided they were going to turn on television and watch cartoons.

I allowed my children to watch certain cartoons, but there were other cartoons I absolutely would not tolerate because of the violence and the demonic activities shown in them. That morning, however, I was busy making breakfast and didn’t realize fully what was happening in the family room until suddenly, I heard mass confusion. When I went into the room, everything seemed to be flying in every direction. The cartoon was loud and filled with confusion and commotion. The children were loud and creating their own confusion and commotion.

I said, “Stop everything. Turn off that set and let’s start out our day by filling up our minds and spirits with good stuff — not this garbage.” We got out our Bible storybook and turned things around right then and there.

The Psalmist said, “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up” (Psalm 5:3).

There’s no better way to start out a day than in the Word of God, in prayer, and by making up our minds that we are going to “look up” to God our Source to put order in our day so that it would be a blessing to God, to others — and to ourselves! Try it!
