Have you ever gone to bed troubled and anxious, only to wake up as troubled and anxious as when you went to bed? I’ve found a way to gain strength for tomorrow as I prepare to go to bed. You may want to try it.
First, sit on the side of your bed and just praise the Lord for a few minutes. Give Him thanks and tell Him how wonderful He is to you. This plants the seed of praise in your heart, and all night while you sleep, deep praises can rise from your soul. I find that when I do this, I have the joy of the Lord when I awake. And Nehemiah 8:10 says, The joy of the Lord is your strength.
Second, open your Bible and read a few verses of Scripture. Maybe you’ve had a hectic day… maybe you’ve been irritated or displeased with others… maybe things have simply just gone wrong. Psalm 18:30,32 NIV says: As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him … It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. Now go to bed and close your eyes, knowing that the Word you’ve read is already at work in your mind and spirit to strengthen you in the Lord.
You’ve praised the Lord, you’ve opened your heart to His Word, and now you’re in bed, empty of self through praise and worship. In this position of strength and rest, exhale divine love toward all people. Forgive those who have hurt you. I find this has a soothing, calming, and restful effect.
Now go to sleep, knowing that God is watching over you. Tomorrow may be the day that God will give you the miracle you need in your family, your job, or your health, and you will be ready to receive it!
