The Greatest Love

From the archives of Evelyn Roberts

It was a warm September day in 1938. Oral and I were sitting in his roadster near the Gulf of Mexico when he told me he loved me and asked me to be his wife. I had never before felt about anyone the way I felt about Oral, and then to have that love returned was beyond anything I had ever expected. My heart overflowed with joy that day!

I’ve experienced other kinds of love in my life: the love a mother has for her children, the love I feel for our extended family and friends, and the love I feel for the Partners of this ministry. These are all wonderful forms of love, but there is still a greater type of love, greater even than what Oral and I have shared for 64 years. The greatest love came to me this way:

When I was twelve years old, there was a revival meeting at our church. One night, a young lady sang a solo and played the violin. I’d never heard sweeter music. As she sang, in my mind I could see Jesus trudging up a long hill, carrying a heavy cross, and He was doing it because He loved me. I started to weep because I didn’t know anyone could love me that much—me, a country girl in Arkansas. But when I opened my heart that night and invited Jesus to come in, I accepted the love He gave me. His love changed my entire life.

The greatest love of all is God’s love for us! God showed how much he loved us by sending his only Son into the world so that we might have eternal lift through him (1 John 4:9 NLT). And it’s so easy to accept Him and His love. Just pray this simple prayer:

Lord Jesus, I believe You love me and You died on the Cross to save me. I receive Your love into my heart. Amen.
