Once, when I was in Anaheim, California, Dr. Ralph Wilkerson preached a great message. He told of a pastor’s wife who was driving her car down the highway when she saw a hitchhiker. She remembered her husband had warned her never to pick up a hitchhiker, but she had such a deep impression to stop that she pulled over and picked up the man.
When he got in, she said, “Now I want to make one thing clear, I’m a Christian woman. I’m a pastor’s wife, and I don’t want anything funny going on.”
The man assured her he was a gentleman. They had some small talk as they drove down the highway, and finally, he said, “The trumpet is at His lips.”
“What did you say?” she asked.
Again the man said, “The trumpet is at His lips,” and then vanished.
The woman was so startled that he had said those words and then vanished that she couldn’t keep her car under control on the highway. It wasn’t long until a patrolman pulled her over.
When the officer approached her car window, she told him about the man saying, “The trumpet is at His lips,” and then vanishing.
The officer said, “Don’t say any more. In the last two hours, six different people have pulled me over and told me they picked up a hitchhiker who had told them the same words and then vanished. I’m not going to give you a ticket. Drive on.”
While Ralph Wilkerson was relating that story, he said, “That’s not all, because in this service is a woman who says, ‘I am the fourth of those six people!’”
All six women had picked up the same hitchhiker and heard him say, “The trumpet is at His lips,” and then vanished.
