A few years ago, I awoke one morning and I said to Richard, “I’m not coming in today to do the television program. I’ve had it! I’m staying in bed.” Richard was shocked by my words, but he knew I meant what I was saying and after talking to me for a few minutes, he finally left and went down to the television studio alone.
After he left, I had it out with God. I said, “I’m sick of all the articles in the newspapers that are running down ministries. I’m tired of fighting.” And then I rolled over and tried to go back to sleep.
The Holy Spirit, however, wouldn’t let me sleep. Finally He spoke in my spirit, “Get up out of this bed. Get your clothes on. Get your makeup on. Get down there and say what I tell you to say.”
I knew in that moment that I had a choice. I could obey or I could disobey. I chose to obey. As I got ready, the Lord spoke again, “You are going to minister to people today about suicide. There are people who are planning to kill themselves today and they are going to be watching this program. If you do not do what I tell you to do and if you do not speak the words that I tell you to speak, I’m going to hold you responsible for their deaths.”
Believe me that got me going! I went down to the program and I began to minister to people on the issue of suicide as I’ve never ministered before. In the weeks and months that followed, we heard from several people who said that they were stopped from committing suicide that day because someone had commanded them in the Name of the Lord to live, and not to die.
I’ve thought often about what the Lord had said to me, “If you don’t do what I tell you to do, I hold you responsible.”
The Lord has something for each of us to do for Him today. There’s some opportunity that He’s put before us…some word He wants us to say to someone…something that He wants us to do. It’s up to us to do it and we’ll be blessed by God when we do.
As the Bible says, “He being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed” (James 1:25).
