Long before I was ever called to preach, my dad was invited to be on the Merv Griffin television show in Los Angeles, and he asked me to come along and sing. Several Hollywood celebrities were also on the program. When it was over, we walked out the artists’ entrance in the back. People were waiting at the stage entrance, asking various stars to sign their autograph books. While my dad gave an autograph, one woman walked over to me and asked, “Are you somebody?” I shrugged my shoulders and said, “I guess not.” “Well,” she said, “sign your name in my book anyway just in case you ever become somebody.”
One time, I arrived at Kennedy Airport, unshaven and exhausted after a 36-hour flight. As I walked through the security line, one of the officers said, “Look, it’s Lindsay’s husband.” “That’s right,” I laughed. “I used to be known as Oral’s son. Now I’m known as Lindsay’s husband.”
Life can often make you feel as though you’re not important and that you don’t matter. But God says, I have loved you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3 NKJV). He knows your name and everything about you: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you (Jeremiah 1:5 NKJV); even the very hairs of your head are all numbered (Luke 12:7). When the God of the universe says, I have called you by your name, you are mine (Isaiah 43:1 NIV)… you know you are somebody!
