I recently heard a story about a man who fell out the window of a tall building. As he started to fall, he prayed. “Lord, save me! Lord, help me!” As he fell past one floor and then the next, he continued to pray and then he looked below and saw a window ledge with a flagpole extended from it. With all his might, he reached out to grab hold of that flagpole, and there he hung as he shouted for help.
Soon his hands began to get weak from gripping the flagpole too tightly and he prayed again, “Lord, save me! Lord, help me!”
The Lord spoke to him and said, “Do you believe that I delivered the children of Israel from the bondage under Pharaoh in Egypt?” “Oh, yes. Lord I believe,” the man said.
The Lord spoke again, “Do you believe that I delivered Daniel from the lions’ den?” The man responded quickly, “Oh, yes, Lord, I believe.”
The Lord spoke yet again, “Do you believe I delivered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from Nebuchadnezzar’s burning fiery furnace?” “Oh, yes, Lord, I believe!” the man shouted.
And then the Lord said, “Then turn loose.” The man looked at the flagpole and at the ground several stories below and said, “Lord, I got myself into this mess; I believe I’ll get myself out.”
That man is like many of us, isn’t he? We believe the God of the Bible, but we have trouble trusting God in the NOW of our lives. We believe in the miracles of yesterday, but we have trouble believing in the miracles of today.
The Bible promises us that Jesus is “the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). If Jesus ever did a miracle in the past, He can work one in the present. If Jesus ever did a miracle for anyone, He still can work a miracle for you.
