We often have a picture of what Christmas is “supposed” to be like…just the right decorations, the right presents, the right people to be with. But some people are unable to celebrate Christmas because it reminds them of a loss, of sorrow, or a hurt they’ve experienced. They don’t want to exchange gifts. They don’t want to hear Christmas music. They wish they could just close their eyes, and when they woke up, Christmas would be over.
The devil tries to use the pain in our lives to cause us to run away from Christmas. But I John 3:8 NKJV tells us, For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. And in Luke 4:18, Jesus said that He was sent to heal the brokenhearted. He came to repair the brokenness in our lives.
You may be saying, “I’ve tried everything, and I cannot get over my hurt. I just cannot face Christmas.” This year, flip the switch of your heart, and instead of running away from the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, embrace it. Say, “No, devil, you will not steal Christmas from me. You will not steal my joy.” Think of every Christmas Carole you hear, every decoration you see, as a reminder that God loves you so much that He sent Jesus to earth to destroy the works of the devil―the very things that are causing you pain right now.
When you welcome Christmas, you are welcoming the arrival of your Savior, your Redeemer, your Healer, and The Mender of broken hearts. Celebrate His arrival!
