The first time I met Oral Roberts — one hot summer at a camp meeting in Sulfur, Oklahoma — the Lord whispered in my heart, “You’re going to marry that man.” But, then, what was I supposed to do? How do you go about getting a man the Lord says you’re supposed to marry? In those days, girls didn’t call boys on the phone. In the first place, we didn’t have a phone, and in the second place, girls just didn’t do those things!
As it turned out, none of that mattered, because when God tells you something, He will bring it to pass His way. (See Psalm 37:5.) I didn’t know how it was going to work out, but I didn’t have to know. I just prayed about it and trusted that if it was the Lord’s will, He would make it happen. I said many times, “Lord, I have no way to work this out. You’re going to have to bring us together.”
Oral and I wrote each other letters for a while, and finally he wrote and asked if he could come to see me in September where I was teaching school in Texas. I wrote back and said, “Yes”… and then I prayed, “Now, Lord, is this You, or isn’t it? If it is, You work it out. But if it isn’t and You have another plan for me, I want to go Your way.”
I think that it’s important to pray if you want your life to conform to God’s plan for you. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV).
