Before you and I were born, our opportunity to rise into newness of life was put into full and final motion by Jesus’ work on the Cross. We can look at that moment when no grave could hold our living Lord, and we can look at the end-time, when He comes to close this present age, and say, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith (see Hebrews 12:2). I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end (Revelations 1:8).
When Jesus fulfilled all the Old Covenant on the Cross and cried, [Father] it is finished (John 19:30), He meant that He had finished everything it took for our salvation of soul, mind, body, and financial need. When His scarred, striped, marred body was dead, it carried balm for our scars, healing for our suffering, and wholeness for our lack.
When the precious blood of Jesus was shed on Calvary, it held in it the finishing of every good thing in our lives to be abundant and eternal. The Resurrection sealed it forever. When we are hurting from the top of our head to the soles of our feet — when sin, sickness, fear, lack of money, family problems, opposition, and persecution threaten everything we need and desire — we can know that Jesus’ death and resurrection covers it all.
When Jesus said in the most tender of words, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit (Luke 23:46), the Father reached down and took His soul, which had been made an offering for our sin. He fixed it so you and I could know that at our time of departure we, too, can feel the Father’s hands taking our soul into His eternal presence.
