The Real You

Richard Roberts

We live in a world that judges people by their looks. The Bible tells us that man looks at the outward appearance (I Samuel 16:7 NKJV). When you look at me, you can see my hair, my hands, and what I’m wearing. But you can’t see the real me. I’m on the inside. When I look at you, I see the color of your hair, the color of your eyes, and the clothes you have on. But that’s only your outward man. The real you is on the inside… your spirit.

When God breathed the breath of life into us and made us a living spirit, He also gave us something very dangerous ― the power of choice. We can choose God or reject Him. I rejected Him for the first nineteen years of my life. I let my mind be in charge. But two weeks before my twentieth birthday I made a choice. I repented and chose God to be Lord of my life.

To “repent” means to change your mind. When we repent of our sins, we literally change the position of our minds. No longer is our mind in charge, but suddenly our spirit ascends above our mind, and we are once again ruled by our spirit man, the way God created us to be.

Satan comes against our minds because that is where we make our choices. Romans 8:7 NIV tells us that the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Most people of the world operate in their minds. A man once told me I was out of my mind. I said, “You’re right, I’m out of my mind and into my spirit where I belong!” God’s Words says, There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit (Romans 8:1 NKJV).
