The Way Home

Richard Roberts

Luke 15 tells the story of young man who left home and squandered all of his father’s inheritance on riotous living. He finally ended up destitute, hungry, and homeless, with nowhere to turn.

When the young man came to the point where he was sick and tired of his lifestyle, he did the only thing he knew to do―he went home. He didn’t know what kind of reception he would get. But the Bible says, When he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him (Luke 15:20 NKJV).

This poignant story is a picture of how our heavenly Father welcomes and forgives us when we return to Him. Perhaps, like the young man in the story, you have reached the bottom. You are weary of your lifestyle, tired of running, tired of being alone, and you don’t know what to do. Maybe you once walked in fellowship with your heavenly Father, but today you find yourself a long way from Him. Or you may have lost fellowship with your family, and like one who is blind, you don’t know how to find the way back home.

In John 14:6 Jesus tells us, I am the way. And God declares in Isaiah 42:16 NIV, I will lead the blind by ways they have not known…I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.

No matter what kind of situation you may find yourself in, God is the way home. And He is waiting for you with open arms!
