Giving a Good Report

Richard Roberts

As Jesus and His disciples traveled in the region of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked them, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am” (Matthew 16:13)?

They responded this way: “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets” (vs 14).

Notice that the disciples did not rehearse the bad report. The disciples could have given all kinds of answers, for there were those who were saying that Jesus was Beelzebub, the very devil himself. Others had called Him a glutton and a winebibber and a person who kept company with sinners. The disciples didn’t cite any of these answers. They gave a good report.

Today, we hear far more bad reports then good ones, don’t we? The newspaper and radio and television programs are filled with bad reports, some even about fellow Christian believers. I’ve discovered one thing about bad reports — they hardly ever offer much good news.

The Bible says that it’s the good news of Jesus Christ that brings people to salvation and healing. So I’m ready for a good report about Jesus today. I’m ready for a good report about the Church and about God’s people. Let’s make today the day we say something positive about our Lord, His work, and His people.
